Game of Werewolves (2012)

AKA: Lobos de Argos / Attack of Werewolves

Premise:
A man returns to his family village to accept an award. What he doesn't know is the whole town are werewolves due to a curse by the man's family. The town is now looking to reverse the curse.

My Take:
An entertaining movie that has just the right amount of absurdity and humor. The special effects are a tad laughable at times though.

The Death of Superman Lives:What Happened? (2015)

Starring: Jon Peters, Kevin Smith, Tim Burton,
Director: Jon Schnepp

Premise:
The story behind what happened to the much anticipated reboot to the Superman movie franchise

My Take:
While never a huge fan of the Superman character, this documentary is very interesting. It has in depth interviews from many of the people involved with the process while the movie was stuck in developmental hell. It's also very interesting to see what each of these talented people would have done with the movie.

Director: Paul Feig

Premise:
World Champion video game players as children are grown up and now have to fight off an alien invasion who attacks in the form of the original arcade video games.

My Take:
A some what charming flick which is probably more nostalgic for people of my age group than anything. There are a few decent laughs too as nothing is taken too seriously.

Shake, Rattle, & Roll 15 (2014)

Starring: Erich Gonzales, Lovi Poe, Matteo Guidicelli, Dennis Trillo, Carla Abellana
Director: Perci M. Intalan, Dondon S. Santos, Jerrold Tarog

Premise:
An anthology of horror stories from the Philippines including a snake creature hiding inside a mall, a meal turns a family into monsters, and an airplane hijacking is interrupted by a the birth of a tiyanak.

My Take:
This is a very popular franchise in the Philippines. My wife, who happens to be Filipina, enjoys the series. For me, the best the thing about the movie is learning more about the folklore and culture of the country. For instant, I never heard of a tiyanak before. As the movie itself, Most of it is fairly over the top.

Digging Up the Marrow (2015)

Starring: Adan Green, Ray Wise
Director: Adam Green

Premise:
A director gets a letter from a man who claims there is an in-between place under the Earth where monsters live... and he has proof.

My Take:
While Ray Wise is great in the roll, maybe a less recognizable face would have been better. Maybe that was the point as most of the flick feels like an inside joke from the director. It ends up being a nice mixture of original horror movie and true documentary footage.

Starring: Krissada Sukosol
Director: Chookiat Sakveerakul

Premise:
A recently fired worker gets a phone call telling him he can earn money by a different task thirteen different times. The catch is if he fails one time, he loses all the money.

My Take:
The tasks range from the comical to the down right disgusting. It builds up to an interesting conclusion. Really though the character isn't one to really care about.

Tusk (2014)

Director: Kevin Smith

Premise:
A podcaster goes to rural Canada to interview a man who claims to have lived an amazing life full of tales. He soon is held hostage by the man who has plans to turn him into a walrus.

My Take:
The movie has a crazy story and contains some of the typical Kevin Smith banter. Parks chews up the scenery with ease delivering a stand out performance. The other characters do their job.

Mr Jones (2013)

Starring: Sarah Jones, Jon Foster
Director: Karl Mueller

Premise:
A couple moves to the desert wilderness to work. They discover their neighbor is an elusive artist, who the couple decide to make the subject of their next documentary. The more the explore the artist and his legend, the more strange situations start occurring.

My Take:
The movie does a good job of building up a mystery surrounding the artist called Mr. Jones and creating an aurora of confusion. The final act is sort of cluster and doesn't necessarily work with what lead up to that point. Still there is enough originality here and great artwork to give it a view.

Suburban Gothic ()

Starring: Matthew Gary Gubler, Kat Dennings, Ray Wise,
Director: Richard Bates

Premise:
A young man goes broke and is forced to move back to his hometown into his parents house. He was also known for talking the dead. It just so happens the yard maintenance crew just dug up a mysterious box.

My Take:
The movie plays more for laughs than horror with hit and miss results. Ray Wise is knock out (as usual) portraying the hard ass coach/father of the main character. It's a fun little watch which is easily forgotten afterwards

Why Horror? (2015)

Director: Nicolas Kleinman, Rob Lindsay

Premise:
A horror fan/writer looks into the psycological nature as to why he loves horror films.

My Take:
A documentary probably will hit close to home with many die hard horror fans (I know Tal Zimmerman's story of fandom is similar to mine). The film effortless goes between the main character's evaluation for his love of horror and many heavy hitters in the genre giving their opinions on the subject.
