Jurassic World (2015)

Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer, BD Wong, Lauren Lapkus, Irrfan Khan
Director: Colin Trevorrow

Premise:
The newest theme park in dinosaur attractions is looking to add a new exhibit. It happens to be a genetically modified dinosaur which breaks loose and threatens the lives of every person in the park

My Take:
I was never a huge fan of the original Jurassic, nor did I see the sequels but the wife wanted to go see the movie so we went. The cast was good and the special effects was amazing. It's an enjoyable but really just a forgettable big budget "B" movie.

Rating: In the middle

Ferocious Planet (2011)

Starring: John Rhyes-Davis, Joe Flanagan
Director: Billy O'Brien

Premise:
Scientists and soldiers are accidentally zapped into a parallel universe where vicious aliens attack.

My Take:
Is it an alternate reality or another planet... who really cares as there are so many holes in the story. The movie is bad, but not in a fun and watchable way.

Dead Before Dawn (2012)

Starring: Martha MacIsaac, Devon Bostick, Christopher Lloyd, Kevin McDonald, Brandon Jay McLaren, Kyle Schmid, April Mullen, Tim Dorian, Brittany Allen
Director: April Mullen

Premise:
A group of college kids mocks a possessed urn and create a curse which turns people into zombie demons.

My Take:
The absurd premise goes over the top and plays each moment up for laughs. While some hit and others miss badly, the approach does make the flick an enjoyable way to burn 90 minutes out of your day.

Penny Dreadful, Season 2 (2015)

Starring: Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadway, Billie Piper, Rory Kinnear, Reeve Carney

Premise:
An explorer who holds interests in the occult, a medium targeted by Lucifer, an American gunslinger who might be werewolf, and Dr Frankenstein come together to battle a wicked, supernatural force wanting to unleash Lucifer upon the world.

My Take:
The second did a great job of building up the each of the character's arc, establishing a villain, and creating a good story. Unfortunately that build up came to an rather abrupt and unsatisfying end early in the last episode of the season which then spent the remaining 45 minutes in boring and talkative flux. It left a bad taste in my mouth. However, there are still plenty of positives from the season.

Beasterday: Here Comes Peter Cottontail (2015)

Starring: John Paul Fedele
Director: Snygg Brothers

Premise:
A giant, mutated rabbit attacks a small town and it's up to a mental dog catcher to save the day.

My Take:
It's a very bad, extremely campy, Z grade flick full of bad acting (mostly), gratuitous nudity, dumb characters, and horrible special effects. But in all fairness it did manage to make me laugh a few times.

Rating: Steaming Pile (but could end up being a cult masterpiece)

The Sky Has Fallen (2009)

Starring: Carey MacLaren, Laurel Kemper
Director: Doug Roos

Premise:
A virus kills most of the population. The few survivors try to make safety in rural areas where they run into creatures determined to wipe out the rest of them.

My Take:
Doug Roos, the creator of the film, reached out for a review. And like any one who does so, I happy review their material.

What seems to be a fairly typical premise on the surface actually has a decent amount of new ideas. The actors do a good job as well to make it all believable. What sets the movie apart is the top notch practical effects. No CGI here and it shows. My biggest criticism of the flick is that it becomes a bit too talky at points which tends to drag it out a bit. Otherwise, this is an entertaining watch.

The Babadook (2014)

Starring: Essie Davis
Director: Jennifer Kent

Premise:
A mysterious book causes a child with an overactive imagination and an exhausted, single mother to deal with a unwanted presence.

Director: Paul Middleditch

Premise:
A young couple tries to make their way through the world after the Apocalypse occurs. Too bad the Anti-Christ wants to marry the girl

My Take:
While their are many horror undertones this movie is a comedy based around the religious rapture. It doesn't many punches either with the talented cast playing it straight. It's a fun little movie.
