Over Your Dead Body (2014)

AKA: Kuime

Starring: Ko Shibasaki, Hideaki Ito, Ebizo Ichikawa,
Director: Takashi Miike

Premise:
A group rehearsing for the play Kwaiden, finds fiction and reality blending together as lust and jealousy conjure up a spirit.

My Take:
The movie gets a tad confusing at time as it jumps between the play rehearsal and real life with the characters. An interesting and more subtle movie from director Miike.

The Mystery of Rampo (1994)

Starring:Naoto Takenaka, Michiko Hada, Mashiro Motiki
Director: Rintaro Mayuzumi, Kazuyoshi Okuyama

Premise:
Writer Edogawa Rampo just had his latest work censored by the government. Then the things in his story start to happen in real life.

My Take:
The movie has solid and slick direction. It definitely favors style over substance as the story is fairly lackluster.

Director: Kazuhiko Yamaguchi

Premise:
A cop finds out he is the last of a clan of werewolves and uses his powers to

My Take:
A unique movie that tosses a lot at the viewer - yakuza, secret societies, spirit animals, and much more. Dont expect any big transformation scenes though.

Crow's Blood, Season 1 (2016)

Starring: Anna Iriyama, Yuki Kashiwagiena, Cristina Valenzuela, Rena Kato

Premise:
A doctor who campaigns against cloning and regenerative techniques changes his mind when his daughter is in a fatal accident.  The procedure works but also changes his daughter into something no one ever suspected.

My Take:
I like the story but it gets a little confusing and hard to follow as the time line jumps around too often. It's definitely an East meets West horror mash up with lots of great visuals and creepiness. It also leaves the door open for future seasons.

Shin Godzilla (2016)

Starring: Hiroki Hasegawa, Jun Kunimura, Satomi Ishihara, Yuataka Takenouchi,
Director: Hideaki Anno, Sjomji Higuichi

Premise:
A creature rises from the sea and makes it's way towards Tokyo.

My Take:
There's a lot of politician walking around talking about how to stop Godzilla and very little of actual Godzilla destroying stuff. And the effects aren't the best, but then again, they never were in Godzilla movies

Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion (1972)

Starring: Meiko Kaji
Director: Shun'ya Ito

Premise:
After being set up by her lover, a crooked detective with the mafia who she then tries to murder, a woman is sent to a woman's prison ran by sadistic guards.

My Take:
What you expect from 70's Japan female prison movie? Lots of nudity, over the top character, crazy blood shed, and utter chaos abounds!

Attack Girl's Swim Team vs The Undead (2008)

AKA: Undead Pool or Joshikyoei Hanrangun

Starring: Sasa Handa, Yuria Hidaka, Ayumu Tokito
Director: Koji Kawano

Premise:
A virus is turning people in the school into mutated zombies. The new girl, with a mysterious past, leads those not infected.

My Take:
I usually dig these over the top splatter fest flicks from Japan but this one never really hooked me. It seemed more interested in being soft core nudie flick through most of the second half. Tighter editing may have made it more enjoyable.

Yakuza Apocalypse (2015)

Starring: Yayan Ruhian
Director: Takashi Miike

Premise:
A young yakuza is turned into a vampire and accidentally starts a plague of vampires.

My Take:
Director Miike is at his full blown weird ass self in the mash of martial arts action, vampires, and even kaiju. It's over top and not always interesting but definitely unique.

Entrails of the Virgin (1986)

Starring: Seako Kizuki, Naomi Hagio, Megumi Kawashima
Director: Kazuo Komizu

Premise:
A group of up and coming models go to the woods with a photographer crew for a weekend photo shoot.

My Take:
Soft core porn disguised as horror flick. Seriously there's about 1 minute regular scene then it cuts to a 5 minute sex scene for the majority of the first half of the movie and since it's Japan, most of it is censored. The result is a film where you dont care about the characters. So when the horror does start happening it's not a big deal. I find it far more disturbing the way blatant misogyny portrayed in the film.

Lust of the Dead 3 (2013)

AKA: Rape Zombie 3

Starring: Yui Aikawa, Asami
Director: Naoyuki Tomomatsu

Premise:
The continuing saga of survivors battling a disease that turns males into sex crazed zombies.

My Take:
It took to number three in the series for me to start getting turned off in the series. Nothing really new occurs and little is added to the story in this one.

Lust of the Dead 2 (2013)

AKA: Rape Zombie 2

Starring: Yui Aikawa, Asami, Maki Aoyama
Director: Naoyuki Tomomatsu

Premise:
A  virus turns the majority of the male population into lustful zombie with contaminated semen.

My Take:
The first movie in the series was a guilty pleasure so I figured why not continue! There's a lot of the same things happening here. Over the top gore, nudity, pure craziness, and underlying social commentary are abound. Definitely not a flick for all viewers but it will no doubt find it's cult following.

Starring: Akira Kubo, Kumi Mizuno, Hiroshi Koizumi
Director: Ishiro Honda

Premise:
Survivors from shipwrecked vessel make it to an island where they wait for help. After finding mushrooms to eat they start mutating.

I found the movie to be a tad boring overall and slowly paced.

Kaidan (2007)

Starring: Kumiko Aso, Takaaki Enoki
Director: Hideo Nakata

Premise:
A money lender is killed by samurai and dumped in a river. Years later, the son of the samurai falls in love with the daughter of the lender. However, the spirit of the dead is not far away.

My Take:
The movie has many different genres thrown in mix. Part modern ghost/supernatural tale and part ancient samurai movie with a decent dose of drama mixed in. The whole things works as far as it meshes well together yet, for reason it could not keep my full attention.

Lust of the Dead (2012)

AKA: Rape Zombie: Lust of the Dead

Starring: Rina Aikawa, Yui Aikawa, Asami
Director: Naoyuki Tomomatsu

Premise:
An infection causes men to become sex crazed zombies and attack women.

My Take:
One knows what you to expect with a a title Rape Zombie. It's an over the top flick in every way. I'd like to say there's a message to the film but I think the makers were just going for ample amount of nudity and vicera and shock value. They did something right as it as spawned two more in the series.

Id (2005)

Starring: Eji Hayashi, Kei Fujiwara
Director: Kei Fujiwara

Premise:
A murderer is forced to deal with the thoughts in is head while dealing with the realities surrounding him.

My Take:
This is a hard movie to watch. There is a lot of crazy, realistic violence and gore. It requires the viewer to focus on what is happening  and try and decipher the story. Unfortunately the rewards are little... at least for me.

Killer Bees (2005)

Director: Norihisa Yoshimura

A group of teenage female campers come across a swarm of deadly bees,

My Take:
The movie attempts to create suspense and fear but falls short. My nerves can only take so many teenage girls screaming at the top of their lungs.
