Darklands (1996)

Starring: Craig Fairbrass, Jon Finch, Rowena King
Director: Julian Richards

Premise:
A journalist investigating a death of a factory worker stumbles upon a cult with sinister intentions.

My Take:
The movie has a solid mystery and strong lead with just enough bizarre things to keep you interested. However it falls just short of being a great cult classic. Maybe a little more layers in the story would have helped or it just went full on crazy instead of touching the surface. In the end it's watchable.

Afflicted (2014)

Starring: Derek Lee, Cliff Prowse
Director: Derek Lee, Cliff Prowse

Premise:
Two friends decide to tour the globe and document it on their website. But shortly after arriving in France, one catches a disease.

My Take:
The movie has an interesting take on vampirism. Unfortunately it doesn't always click mainly due to undeveloped characters. The first person documentary style shooting gets a tad annoying at times but does flow well in the context of the story.

Backcountry (2015)

Starring: Missy Peregrym, Eric Baflour, Nicolas Campbell
Director: Adam MacDonald

Premise:
A couple goes on a hiking weekend only to get lost deep in the wilderness and into the territory of a grizzly bear.

My Take:
A slick film which builds the characters as they get into their bad situation and manages to keep the suspense high until the end. A outstanding gore scene too (but I wont spoil it).

Premise:
A team of archaeologists discover a pyramid buried deep in the desert. Due to war breaking out in the country, the a forced to leave but not before taking a quick peak inside.

The story is different since it deals with Egyptian gods and legends. It also has some decent jump scares. But in the end the movie is a forgettable one.

Summer of Blood (2014)

Starring: Jonathan Caouette
Director: Onur Turkel

Premise:
A middle aged complainer sees his life turn around after becoming a vampire.

My Take:
A mildly amusing tale which hinges a lot on how much one can stand the unlikable main character. Otherwise standard fair about a normal person suddenly adjusting to vampire powers.

Fear the Walking Dead, Season 1 (2015)

Starring: Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Ruben Blades, Mercedes Mason, Elizabeth Rodriguez,

Premise:
A group of people come together when a epidemic sweeps the globe.

My Take:
For a series claiming to be how The Walking Dead began it felt rushed and was very underwhelming on how things really got started. It's basically a group of people banding together at the beginning of the outbreak in Los Angeles. Most of the time they are under government protection in a compound asking "what is going on?". Maybe my expectations were too high. Not all is lost however, it was a short season and perhaps some things will get flushed out as the series progresses in season two.

The Signal (2014)

Starring: Brendon Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Laurence Fishburne
Director: William Eubank

Premise:
Three friends try to track a mysterious signal in the desert. Then their situation gets very strange.

My Take:
A layered and slow burning original tale. For some reason it didn't strike a cord with me.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

Starring: Addison Timlin, Veronica Cartwright, Anthony Anderson, Joshua Leonard, Gary Cole, Edward Herrmann, Denis O'Hare
Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

Premise:
65 years after a masked serial killer in small town, the murders start up again.

My Take:
The movie really has a decent amount of suspense and keeps you guessing until the end with a nice twist. Unfortunately there's also the usual slasher tropes like the killer always conveniently being where they need to be.

Starring: Reid Warner, Ben Rovner, Darrin Brag, Jelena Nik

Premise:
A group of friends break into the secretive Area 51 to find more than they ever imagined.

My Take:
The movie falls under typical traps of the sub-genre. Plus it's boring. By the time anything of substance happens the viewer doesn't really care.

Deep in space a research vessel comes across an empty German ship full of artifacts belonging to another species. They also discover the creature which killed the people on board.

This "Alien" ripoff does have a small amount of charm but at the end of the day it is very forgettable.

It Follows (2015)

Starring: Maika Monroe,
Director: David Robert Mitchell

Premise:
A girl is stalked by a blood thrifty, shape shifting entity after having sex and the only way for her to be safe is to pass it onto another person.

My Take:
The movie is full style, good suspense, and interesting lore. It does fall short with a few plot holes and what the hell are they doing moments. Still this is an intense and enjoyable flick.
