The Hidden Face (2011)

AKA: La Cara Oculta

Starring: Martina Garcia, Clara Lago, Quim Gutierrez
Director: Andres Baiz

Premise:
A couple are having a rough spot in their relationship. The woman finds a secret room in their house where she can spy on him. She makes it look like she left him in order to resolve their issues and locks herself in the room. But she forgot the key and is trapped. The man is left to wonder what happened to her and moves on with his life, including a new girlfriend, while the old girlfriend is left to watch.

My Take:
Overall, I enjoyed the movie but I do have a major problem as the viewer doesn't really know the timeline between when the old girlfriend locks herself in the room and the guy starts dating again. And how did she survive that long without food? Beside those obvious flaws it's entertaining to watch the new girlfriend try to figure out what is going on and if the house is haunted

Curse of the Devil (1973)

Starring: Paul Naschy

She summons Satan who releases a seductress upon the young man. She bites him, which turns him into a werewolf. Soon a body count starts to add up in the village and people are searching for a culprit.

My Take:
If you take away the outlandish premise, which as you see throws a lot in the mix to come up with a story, then it is a watchable movie.

The Vampires' Night Orgy (1974)

Starring: Jack Taylor, Helga Line
Director: Leon Kimovsky

Premise:
A bus breaks down in a remote village and the group is forced to spend a couple of days while it gets repaired. What they don't know is the town is full of vampires.

My Take:
There's a lot of bad and boring scenes in this flick including mutliple strange storylines with the individuals of the bus. One saving grace is a decent atmospheric setting. Some how it kept be captivated dispite the flaws. I'm really not sure why though.

Starring: Howard Vernon,
Director: Jess Franco

Premise:
A young girl is found murdered and the police expect the brother of a former Baron who had a reputation for torture, rape, and murder.

This early Franco oozes style and has a big nod to German Expressionism. The cinemaphotography is spectacular. A solid suspenseful mystery from start to finish.

AKA: Crimson, The Color of Blood  / The Man With the Severed Head

Starring: Paul Naschy
Director: Juan Fortuny

Premise:
After a botched robbery a doctor tries to perform a head transplant on one of the criminals.

My Take:
The movie starts out decent with criminals on the run angle but it loses steams fast once they force a doctor to perform a head transplant. No one can think that is a good idea...right?

Horror Rises from the Tomb (1975)

AKA: Horror From the Tomb

Starring: Paul Naschy, Emma Cohen
Director: Carlos Aured

Premise:
A group of people on an island find the buried head of a warlock. The head comes back to life and possesses others to find his body.

My Take:
The movie definitely has the 70's Euro-Horor feel as it drips sexiness and mystery. Not everything makes sense and in fact, most of is rather outlandish, but the cast plays it straight and it adds to the dread (or what little there is).

Sleep Tight (2011)

AKA: Mientras Duermes

Starring: Luis Tosar, Marta Etura
Director: Jaume Balagueró

Premise:
A concierge at an apartment complex spends his nights infatuated with a woman who lives there and stalking around her place while she sleeps.

My Take:
Intense and creepy are the two best words I can think of to describe this outstanding movie. As the time ticks away, layer upon layer is revealed focusing on the disturbing lengths this psycopath goes to be closer to the woman. It's truly frightening and pulled off with excellence by the actors and the director.

Rating: So Good
