Director: Terence Fisher

Premise:
Dr. Frankenstein takes the brain from a man who was beheaded for a murder he did not commit and transplants into the body of the girl he loved after she commits suicide. The transplant succeeds and the monster now wants revenge.

A slightly different twist on Frankenstein lore from Hammer Studios that has more hits than misses making it wortht the time to watch.

The Plague

Artist: Those Poor Bastards
Released: 2008

My Take:
Those Poor Masters are masters at a dark country gospel sound (termed gothic country) with brooding lyrics of despair and death. This album can be downright depressing at times and frighening at others. The band reminds me a lot of Johnny Cash with songs like "Old Pine Box", "Evil on My Mind", Black Lightning", and "Nightmare Lullabye".

Stoker (2013)

Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney, Jackie Weaver
Director: Chan Park Woo

Premise:
After her father's sudden death, his brother comes home to help out the daughter and emotionally fragile mother. The mysterious uncle seems to have other motives and secrets as he and the daughter grow closer to each.

My Take:
A fantastic American debut by the famed Korean director. The movie is never at a loss for intrigue while riding a fine line on a touchy subject matter. The air of mystery and dread are never too far off each frame and are helped by the great editing and pacing of the film. And the cast has never been finer. I think this film will be like many others of the directors, a great first viewing that only gets better with additional viewings.

Yellow Wallpaper (2012)

Starring: Juliet Landau, Aric Cushing, Dale Dickey, Veronica Cartwright, Michael Moriarty
Director: Logan Thomas

Premise:
After a fire takes their house and their daughter's life, a young couple and the wife's sister move into a strange house. Soon the wife starts to see an apparition resembling their daughter and withdraws from the family.

My Take:
A very slow moving southern gothic tale with lots of holes in the plot. But it grew on me over the course of the watching it. And being set in the late 1800's helps the mood and mystery.

Dark Portals (2002)

AKA: Vidocq

Starring: Gérard Depardieu
Director: Pitoff

Premise:
A biographer of a famous detective, during the 1800's in a small France village, searches for clues to get revenge on the slained detective and bring the murderer to justice.

My Take:
A lot of movie has Depardieu running around like a madman trying to solve a murder and chase down the masked figure responsible. Though the movie beautifully filmed and has lots of flash, it got to be a little redudnant for me.

Cult, Season 1 (2013)

Starring: Robert Knepper, Matthew Davis, Jessica Lucas, Alona Tal

Premise:
A popluar television show about a cult seems to have loyal viewers and insiders, very similar to a cult, who look for hidden messages in the show and act out in a violent manner.

My Take:
I thought the story of the show was outstanding. The execution however was lacking. And once the show was announced as canceled half way through the season, the rest of it felt rushed.

Favorite Episode:
none.

Schizo (1978)

AKA: Amok

tarring: Lynne Frederick, Stephanie Beacham, John Leyton, Jack Watson
Director: Peter Walker

Premise:
Newlyweds try to start their lives together but the girl is getting stalked by her step-father who has just been released from prison for killing her mother.

My Take:
It's an entertaining movie which has some parts easy to figure out and a couple which caught me a tad off guard. There's a little gore and Walker weaves a fun tale.

9 Miles Down (2009)

Starring: Adrian Paul, Kate Nauta
Director: Anthony Waller

Premise:
A hired security patrol heads to a remote site in the desert to find out what happened to a team of scientists who are attempting to drill farther down into the Earth than has ever been done before.

My Take:
The movie is slightly better than I anticipated. It's basically two actors in one setting with the patrolman trying to figure out if the lone survivor at the camp is real or demon released from Hell.
